The World Then Noncommercial ShareAlike License 1.0 Original project: https://theworldthen.com Source repository: https://github.com/mikeroni/theworldthen Original author: Michael Manning Copyright (c) 2026 Michael Manning and other identified contributors, each for their own copyrightable contributions. Adopted 2026-10-16. Adapted, with the author's approval, from the Realms Noncommercial ShareAlike License 1.0 by the same author; the operative terms are the same, the covered components and names are this project's. 1. What this license covers "Covered Material" means the original code, documentation, and other copyrightable material expressly offered under this license by a person entitled to license it. In this project, that includes the original application software: the markup, styles, and scripts of the atlas page (source/app.html and the pages built from it), the structure and styles of the About page, the build script (source/build.py), and the build documentation, to the extent those rights are held by the licensors. The project's original creative content, meaning its curated historical dataset (roster curation and religion, culture, and language tags), its prose, its visual design, and its generative sound design, is NOT Covered Material. It is offered separately under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license, as LICENSE.md states. Where a single file holds both software and creative content, each part keeps its own license. "Licensor" means each copyright holder who offers their contribution under this license. Each Licensor grants rights only to their own contribution. "Derivative" means an adaptation or modification of Covered Material, or a larger work incorporating it, to the extent that creating or sharing that work requires permission from a Licensor under copyright law. It does not include an independently created work merely using the same ideas, methods, interfaces, or unprotected facts. Separate dependencies, programs, or data do not become Derivatives just because they are used alongside the project, communicate with it, or appear in the same distribution. "You" means the person or entity exercising rights under this license. Third-party components and data, including D3, topojson-client, flubber, the Fraunces, Inter, and Cinzel typefaces, the border geometry derived from the historical-basemaps project (GPL-3.0), Wikipedia text (CC BY-SA 4.0), Wikidata data (CC0), AUSTLANG data (CC BY 4.0), Natural Earth data (public domain), and images served from Wikimedia Commons, are not relicensed here. Their applicable licenses remain separate, including where a copy is embedded in the same file as Covered Material. Material marked with another license keeps that license. Unprotected facts, dates, coordinates, and ideas are not made exclusive by this license. This license cannot grant rights that a Licensor does not hold. 2. Permission Subject to these conditions, each Licensor gives You worldwide, nonexclusive, royalty-free permission under their copyright to use, run, study, copy, modify, display, and distribute their Covered Material and Derivatives for the noncommercial purposes described in section 3. These grants last for the duration of the licensed rights unless terminated under section 9. They cannot be withdrawn from a compliant recipient merely because a Licensor later changes the project's license or stops publishing it. No permission is granted for uses outside these terms unless separately agreed by the relevant rights holders. 3. Noncommercial use and the portfolio exception Permitted purposes include personal learning, noncommercial research and teaching, hobby projects, and freely available community tools, where the Covered Material or Derivative is not used to earn revenue, deliver paid work, or operate or promote a commercial product or service. Commercial uses requiring separate permission include selling copies, charging for access or features, incorporating the project into a paid product, using it in paid client work or a business's internal operations, and monetizing its operation through advertising, sponsorship, or affiliate revenue. Offering the project as a free feature of a commercial product or service does not avoid this restriction. The activity matters, not whether the operator is an individual, company, or nonprofit. As an express exception, an individual may show an honestly attributed personal learning project or Derivative in their portfolio, including when seeking employment or freelance work. This permits demonstrating their skills; it does not permit supplying the Covered Material or Derivative as paid work, selling access to it, or claiming others' work as their own. An employer or prospective client may inspect such a portfolio for evaluation, but receives no permission for commercial deployment from it. Paying an ordinary hosting provider to run an otherwise permitted project does not by itself make that project commercial. You may authorize such a provider to copy and run the necessary Covered Material solely on Your behalf to host that permitted project, including for ordinary hosting fees. This limited permission does not authorize the provider to sell or reuse the Covered Material as its own product or for another customer's project. Voluntary contributions solely to reimburse documented direct hosting costs are permitted if they confer no preferential access, features, advertising, or services and do not exceed those costs. Other donations or sponsorship require permission. These exceptions do not license unrelated commercial exploitation by a hosting provider or another third party. 4. Credit and notices When You distribute Covered Material or a Derivative, retain the applicable copyright notices, author credits, third-party notices, this license, and its warranty disclaimer. Include a link to the original project where reasonably practicable. Clearly identify material changes and their author; a changelog or version history is sufficient. You may add accurate credit for Your own contributions but must not remove earlier applicable credit. For a hosted or interactive version, provide reasonably accessible credit and links to the license and required source, for example in an About, Help, or footer area. Credit need not appear on every screen. 5. ShareAlike and source availability If You distribute a Derivative or let others use a hosted Derivative, You must offer Your contributions to that Derivative under this exact license, version 1.0, and include its full text. Retaining this license only on the original files is not sufficient if Your changes to those files or other copyrightable parts of the Derivative are offered only under different terms. Do not impose additional legal or technical restrictions that prevent recipients from exercising these permissions on the Covered Material and Derivative. Every recipient receives the permissions in this license directly from each Licensor for that Licensor's contribution. You may not replace those permissions with a sublicense that removes the noncommercial or ShareAlike conditions. Independent third-party components remain under their own licenses; do not combine components into a Derivative if their applicable terms cannot be satisfied together. When You distribute Covered Material or a Derivative in executable, compiled, bundled, or otherwise noneditable form, give each recipient access to the complete corresponding source at no charge. This means the preferred editable form, including modifications and the project-specific scripts, dependency information, and instructions reasonably needed to build and run that version. An accessible link accompanying the release is sufficient, provided the source is actually available for that release and remains available for as long as You offer the release. If You let other people use a hosted version, whether modified or not, offer those users the same source access while that version is available. A link to the upstream source is sufficient only when it corresponds to the version You actually run, including any modifications. Sharing source with the users or recipients is required; publishing it to everyone on the internet is not required. Each recipient may redistribute it under this license. You need not publish private modifications that You neither distribute nor host for others. Corresponding source does not require passwords, tokens, private user data, or independent operational datasets. Provide safe configuration examples or synthetic sample data where needed instead. Do not label actual program code as configuration or data to evade source sharing. Ordinary third-party tools and dependencies may be identified with versions and obtaining instructions instead of copied into the source, subject to their own license requirements. 6. Patent permission For permitted uses, each Licensor grants a worldwide, nonexclusive, royalty-free patent license limited to claims they can license that are necessarily infringed by their contribution, alone or as incorporated in the project version in which they offered it. This does not cover claims infringed only by other modifications or combinations. If You bring a patent infringement claim alleging that the Covered Material infringes Your patents, the patent permissions You receive under this license end. 7. Names and other rights This license grants no trademark, publicity, privacy, or endorsement rights. You may identify the original author and project for attribution, but may not imply that a fork is official or endorsed without permission. You may give a Derivative its own name while keeping required credit. Rights available independently under applicable law, including fair use, fair dealing, and other exceptions, are not restricted by this license. Separate permissions, such as rights GitHub provides for viewing and forking public repositories, are not withdrawn by this license. 8. Contributions and separate commercial permission Contributors keep ownership of their contributions. Offering a contribution under this license does not transfer ownership or give the maintainer an unrestricted right to relicense it. A different or commercial license requires permission from all relevant rights holders for the material used, not merely the repository owner when others own parts. For permission concerning Michael Manning's contributions, contact mikemanning1223@gmail.com. No commercial or alternative license is implied by discussion, attribution, or availability of the source. 9. Noncompliance If You fail to comply, the permissions granted to You under this license terminate. For a first violation, they are automatically reinstated if You fully correct the violation within 30 days after becoming aware of it. For other violations or a missed deadline, reinstatement requires express permission from the affected Licensor. Reinstatement does not by itself resolve liability for an earlier violation. Compliant downstream recipients do not lose their own permissions merely because Your permissions end. 10. Warranty and liability To the extent applicable law permits, the Covered Material is provided without warranties, including warranties of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, title, or noninfringement. Each Licensor disclaims liability for losses arising from use of the Covered Material or these terms. This does not exclude liability or statutory rights that applicable law does not allow to be excluded. 11. Interpretation These permissions apply only within the rights a Licensor can grant. If a provision is unenforceable, it should be limited only as necessary under applicable law; remaining provisions continue where legally possible. A plain-English summary does not replace or broaden this license. No later license version automatically replaces this version for a recipient.
